Whaling vessel of the era with both sail and steam |
The tune used for the dance is a folk balad from the late 1800s known variously as Old Polina or The Balaena. Balaena also happens to be a genus of whales that includes the Blowhead Whale. The balad tells the tale of a ship in the whaling fleet would sail every year from Dundee, Scotland to St. John, Newfoundland. According to the song, this ship was the fastest in the fleet.
